In a relatively short time German soprano Mojca Erdmann has established herself as one of the most versatile and exciting new voices in the highly competitive world of opera. From early student days at the Cologne College of Music, her career has been paved with success. In February Ms Erdmann came to Sydney for the world premiere of her new album and talked to me over the phone. Was it risky to put side by side the great Amadeus and composers that are less well-known and who have unfairly fallen into neglect, I asked? I believe that I have found wonderful pieces. Parallel studies helped a lot, she admits.

She was cheeky and that is one aspect of my character Back in the days when I started my singing lessons, I knew that I would become a singer, a soloist. As a violinist I only wanted to play in the orchestra; I never thought of becoming a soloist. In my opinion a soloist can reach the audience more directly.

This is something that came to me suddenly. She relentlessly carved her niche as a devoted interpreter of modern music; this direction was quite natural, she explains. I also have perfect pitch which makes it a little bit easier for me to sing this kind of music.

But I can be very vivacious and humorous as well. The magic of the opera is in the fact that you can deal with so many characters, and you can find so many colours in yourself and put them into various parts preparing a new role. Your repertoire includes great classical composers such as Mozart, Puccini, Bizet, Verdi, Strauss and Beethoven, as well as contemporary composers such as Mills.

Do you have a favourite composer or operatic work? Exploring any role either fresh or as a repeat study brings a melange of joy, hatred and trepidation. Thank God for all composers! My most challenging role was surely due less to the role and more to circumstances. Singing with Richard Bonynge at the podium and Dame Joan Sutherland in the audience was a major career highlight.

I never heard Dame Joan live. Richard has always been encouraging and complimentary to me.

As I see it, most baritones entering the Verdi domain begin with roles of the higher tessitura like Belcore, Malatesta, Valentine and Zurga, which I had tackled but never felt entirely at home, then they make their Verdi baptism on Posa in Don Carlos. My journey has bypassed Posa, which along with Da Luna, sits a little higher than the other Verdi roles. Not long before the Scarpia engagement, I met the renowned teacher, Joshua Hecht, whose brilliant career as a singer, in the States and in Europe, covered this dramatic baritone repertoire.

Joshua really opened up my technique, character and repertoire redirection. Looking back, James Christiansen had been right in gently leading me in this direction 20 years earlier, but now I was mature enough and the time was right.

Preparing for any role, my earliest steps include translating the piece. There are transliterations of most pieces but they usually mess up the musical emphasis and tend not to be terribly accurate. Then, of course, when I work with others, so much more becomes apparent. Is it more fun playing the baddie?

If there is a piece of advice you would like to give to an emerging opera singer, what would that be? Make sacrifices and take risks. Allow yourself to be vulnerable. Who or what inspires you? Anyone who, struggling to cope and faced with daily dilemmas, owns their lack of power and finds the courage to ask for help, in order to find the next step. Young professional musicians based nationally and abroad come together to offer an accessible line-up of contemporary and traditional classical music.

Artistic Director and New Farm based pianist, Brieley Cutting, said the series aims to showcase musicians from Brisbane who have had to leave the area to continue forging ahead with their career. We are seeing a return of several prominent young professional musicians. Launched in December and with its first concert last month, the Series also offers workshops, information sessions and Emerging Artists recitals.

I recently had a lovely conversation with that living treasure, Dame Vera Lynn, by phone from her home in Ditchling, Sussex. Dame Vera favoured me with an extended interview about her life and musical career which started when she was just seven years of age! Now 94 and still in fine fettle, she reminisced about starting out singing in a little East End London club, and realized immediately that she wanted to be in show business from then on. At the age of eleven, she dropped out of school and began touring with a Music Hall Variety Band all over England.

In she made her first radio broadcast, appearing with the famous Joe Loss Orchestra. Her recording and performance career continued to blossom through the 50s, 60s and 70s; hosting her own radio and TV shows, starring in many Royal Command Performances, and being a guest star on many shows, including regularly appearing on the Morecambe and Wise Christmas specials. Another great star who has been entertaining the world for decades, with and without his partner Dean Martin, is famed actor, comedian and film producer Mr Jerry Lewis.

In the case of Jill Atkinson, Queensland Symphony Orchestra QSO principal harpist, this was the instrument which would define her life and the lives of several generations of her family. Jill inherited a Morley harp from her grandmother who for many years used to organise Sunday night family musical evenings to play her favourite pieces. None of the other grandchildren wanted it.
