In a relatively short time German soprano Mojca Erdmann has established herself as one of the most versatile and exciting new voices in the highly competitive world of opera. From early student days at the Cologne College of Music, her career has been paved with success. In February Ms Erdmann came to Sydney for the world premiere of her new album and talked to me over the phone. Was it risky to put side by side the great Amadeus and composers that are less well-known and who have unfairly fallen into neglect, I asked? I believe that I have found wonderful pieces. Parallel studies helped a lot, she admits.
She was cheeky and that is one aspect of my character Back in the days when I started my singing lessons, I knew that I would become a singer, a soloist. As a violinist I only wanted to play in the orchestra; I never thought of becoming a soloist. In my opinion a soloist can reach the audience more directly.
This is something that came to me suddenly. She relentlessly carved her niche as a devoted interpreter of modern music; this direction was quite natural, she explains. I also have perfect pitch which makes it a little bit easier for me to sing this kind of music.
This gives me more possibilities, more freedom in terms of interpretation. He is such a wonderful conductor. While we were doing Schumann I was just sitting there with my eyes and ears wide open, looking and listening. I have had the privilege of working with Sir Simon Rattle as well. There have been many other wonderful artists along the way so far.
Italian Opera in English: Cinderella, Adapted by M. Rophino
In the gallery of the various characters she has brought to the stage, is there any that is close to the real Mojca Erdmann, I ask, unaware that I am entering a domain that many opera singers would like to keep strictly private. Recently I sang the role of Despina for the first time. She was cheeky and that is one aspect of my character. I also did Pamina last November and December in Cologne. I can find myself in her because I can be very serious and very calm deep inside.

But I can be very vivacious and humorous as well. The magic of the opera is in the fact that you can deal with so many characters, and you can find so many colours in yourself and put them into various parts preparing a new role. She will give recitals all around Germany in a couple of months. Mojca says that she is looking forward to travelling and doing various roles. What genre of music does she listen to when she finds a moment to relax, I ask, before wrapping up our conversation. In my time off I love doing sports. If the weather is fine I love jogging, or doing some exercise in the gym if the weather is awful.
Books, movies and sharing time with my friends are also a part of my routine. It sounds ordinary, but I really think that having friends is very important. She seems to enjoy all the buzz she has created in recent years. At the same time she is aware that hard work and her impeccable artistry can take her further along the path to success. Were your parents musicians? How did your love of opera and classical music begin? Both parents enjoyed a musical upbringing. Folk singing was a vibrant part of the northeast of England culture. Apparently he had a sort of Harry Lauder act.
My father taught himself rudimentary levels of clarinet, violin, guitar and ukulele and passed folk songs on to us. I was drawn to opera through convenience and lack of interest in anything else. As a final year student at university, I was persuaded that if successful in auditioning for the State Opera of South Australia Chorus, there might be some negotiated credits toward my degree. After finishing your vocal studies in Europe with some of the finest tutors you chose a career in Australia rather than the UK or Europe?
What choice? Of course I had a choice whether to accept the bird in the hand or take a risk but the bird was so satisfying. A career in Europe would have been romantic and I did audition with some success in England and Europe, but to my delight, Moffatt Oxenbould, Bill Gillespie and Suzanna Conway continued offering me extremely satisfying roles in Australia. Your repertoire includes great classical composers such as Mozart, Puccini, Bizet, Verdi, Strauss and Beethoven, as well as contemporary composers such as Mills.
Do you have a favourite composer or operatic work? Exploring any role either fresh or as a repeat study brings a melange of joy, hatred and trepidation. Thank God for all composers! My most challenging role was surely due less to the role and more to circumstances. The hospital emergency department diagnosed it to be sprained but after a long weekend on ice I took myself to a sports med clinic where the West Coast Eagles doctor took one look and knew it was broken.
He assured me that if I were serious about his program, he could have me on stage for the season maybe with a limp. I wore a moonboot through rehearsal, did hydrotherapy nearly every morning, physio etc. What would you regard as a career highlight? Singing with Richard Bonynge at the podium and Dame Joan Sutherland in the audience was a major career highlight.
I never heard Dame Joan live. Richard has always been encouraging and complimentary to me.

Can you expand on this please? As I see it, most baritones entering the Verdi domain begin with roles of the higher tessitura like Belcore, Malatesta, Valentine and Zurga, which I had tackled but never felt entirely at home, then they make their Verdi baptism on Posa in Don Carlos. My journey has bypassed Posa, which along with Da Luna, sits a little higher than the other Verdi roles. Not long before the Scarpia engagement, I met the renowned teacher, Joshua Hecht, whose brilliant career as a singer, in the States and in Europe, covered this dramatic baritone repertoire.
Joshua really opened up my technique, character and repertoire redirection. Looking back, James Christiansen had been right in gently leading me in this direction 20 years earlier, but now I was mature enough and the time was right.
Do you enjoy working in Brisbane? Brisbane is marvellous. Our daughter was born here. Tell us about this character and how you have been preparing yourself for the role. California was a rough place during the gold rush. The television series Deadwoodpaints it pretty well. These guys are absolute desperados. Jack happens to be the one desperado with enough of a handle on reality to be charged with keeping the law, of which there is none.

Preparing for any role, my earliest steps include translating the piece. There are transliterations of most pieces but they usually mess up the musical emphasis and tend not to be terribly accurate. Then, of course, when I work with others, so much more becomes apparent. Is it more fun playing the baddie?
Some people pay thousands to medical insurance companies, to psychiatrists and Reiki masters or visit priests and the like in order to find the core of their disturbances and disarm or exorcise them. Sometimes it is fun.

If there is a piece of advice you would like to give to an emerging opera singer, what would that be? Make sacrifices and take risks. Allow yourself to be vulnerable. Who or what inspires you? Anyone who, struggling to cope and faced with daily dilemmas, owns their lack of power and finds the courage to ask for help, in order to find the next step. Young professional musicians based nationally and abroad come together to offer an accessible line-up of contemporary and traditional classical music.
Artistic Director and New Farm based pianist, Brieley Cutting, said the series aims to showcase musicians from Brisbane who have had to leave the area to continue forging ahead with their career. We are seeing a return of several prominent young professional musicians. Launched in December and with its first concert last month, the Series also offers workshops, information sessions and Emerging Artists recitals.
The area in and around Newstead offers excellent restaurants, bars, galleries, cafes and shops for which the area is renowned. The two-piano team was formed while the pianists were living in the United States, and has performed in tours, festivals and concert series in that country, as well as in Australia and Israel. Anna has served on the music faculties of Yale and Chapman University, and both of them taught at the California Institute of the Arts. Anna and Liam now direct the piano department at the University of Queensland, where they are also Ensemble-in-Residence.
I recently had a lovely conversation with that living treasure, Dame Vera Lynn, by phone from her home in Ditchling, Sussex. Dame Vera favoured me with an extended interview about her life and musical career which started when she was just seven years of age! Now 94 and still in fine fettle, she reminisced about starting out singing in a little East End London club, and realized immediately that she wanted to be in show business from then on. At the age of eleven, she dropped out of school and began touring with a Music Hall Variety Band all over England.
In she made her first radio broadcast, appearing with the famous Joe Loss Orchestra. Her recording and performance career continued to blossom through the 50s, 60s and 70s; hosting her own radio and TV shows, starring in many Royal Command Performances, and being a guest star on many shows, including regularly appearing on the Morecambe and Wise Christmas specials. Another great star who has been entertaining the world for decades, with and without his partner Dean Martin, is famed actor, comedian and film producer Mr Jerry Lewis.
Gets New Patrons I also recently had the opportunity to interview actor, comedian and singer Jim Nabors, from his home in Hawaii. Mr Nabors is also very famous for his rich baritone voice, and has recorded over 45 albums during his long and successful career. He spent 10 years in Las Vegas headlining his own show at the Las Vegas Hilton, and among other career highlights has also toured the U. Jim counts Carol Burnett and Burt Reynolds amongst his close friends, and has appeared in many television shows and movies with them.
I must say I rather envy him, as he now resides in a delightful old colonial farm house on the top of Diamond Head in Oahu! Mr Nabors sends his best regards to our listeners, and we will be broadcasting my interview with him on Silver Memories also in the near future. You can also look forward to hearing some of his music as well! The upper level of this unique cottage contains two bedrooms with a king-size bed in one and two singles in the other. A royal instrument for some, heavenly and esoteric for others. In the case of Jill Atkinson, Queensland Symphony Orchestra QSO principal harpist, this was the instrument which would define her life and the lives of several generations of her family. Jill inherited a Morley harp from her grandmother who for many years used to organise Sunday night family musical evenings to play her favourite pieces. None of the other grandchildren wanted it.
